Lead Business Analyst
Cheryl – Lead Business Analyst

How did you get into the business?
I do not have formal Business Analyst education, yet I was hired as a Business Analyst, I believe, based on my past experiences. I ‘officially’ joined the IT world later in my career and soon learned that I had something to bring to the table. I had been doing business analysis work for years – I just didn’t have the names for the activities I carried out.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the business?
Being sent to work with a new client can be daunting. There is so much to learn, while trying to be the professional consultant the client expects. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. And every Sierran has a Career Advisor that wants to help you succeed. That’s a valuable relationship and not one I’ve experienced elsewhere.
Tell us about your favorite or most challenging project or moment at Sierra Systems? What made it memorable? Were other Sierrans instrumental in helping you succeed?
Really, for me, my favourite moment was being asked to join Sierra in the first place – to have appreciation for the work I’d done. I feel valued here.
What do you like to do outside of work? Tell us about your passions. I’m from B.C. and am currently working in Ontario. I do get home regularly, but when I’m here and not working I’m learning Tai Chi, playing golf, and enjoying the area and people. I’ve even found someone who enjoys doing jigsaw puzzles as much as I do, and we’ve made trades.
As a consultant travel is often a component of your work schedule. How do you manage your professional and personal obligations while on the road?
I work with my clients so that my travel and vacation schedule, as much as possible, does not interfere with my commitments or project deadlines. Sometimes I work remotely so I’m able to attend to personal business. I’m a long-time subscriber to a Dinner Theatre so I arrange my travel home around that. When I’m away I stay in close touch with family and friends at home – by phone, text, Facetime, etc. I’ve also had friends and family visit me here.

SharePoint/Office 365 Architect
Kamal - SharePoint/Office 365 Architect

How long have you been with Sierra Systems? I have been working with Sierra Systems for last 6 years.
What is your current title and role? What practice/solution/or industry specialty do you have? I am currently part of the Technology group. I work as a SharePoint/Office 365 Architect in multiple development and support projects.
Tell us about your daily activities and what you are responsible for. I am responsible for design and implementation of the technical solutions based on the requirements from the client. My daily activities include interacting with clients to understand the requirements, design and implement the best technical solution.
What’s the best part of your current role with Sierra Systems? What is the most challenging aspect and how do you manage it? The best part of my role is that I get to work with multiple clients. There are few clients whom I never met face to face but still share a good rapport. Different clients have different challenges and work never gets boring (which is a good part). Sometimes the challenge could be in terms of solving a technical issue or it could be tight project deadlines or managing client expectations. My past experience as a consultant comes in handy when dealing with such challenges.
What has enabled you to successfully grow your career at Sierra Systems? What impact has the Career Advisor/Career Owner relationship/program had on that? Sierra systems provide ample opportunities to grow your career. I got the opportunity to work on diverse technologies, be it in Infrastructure work or project development. My Career Advisor has been a great mentor and always supports me in my career goals.
How does Sierra Systems support your hobbies/passions outside of work? We have a great work/life balance while working at Sierra systems. Work hours flexibility at Sierra helps with managing career and personal life expectations.

ServiceNow Integration Specialist
Adrian – ServiceNow Integration Specialist
Title: ServiceNow Integration Specialist
Years at Sierra Systems: 11
What is your current title and role?
Systems Consultant / ServiceNow Integration Specialist
What were your previous roles before joining Sierra Systems?
I worked in Application Managed Services/Quality Assurance, Manufacturing and prior to Sierra Systems I was involved in Infrastructure/Corporate.
Tell us about your daily activities and what you are responsible for
I provide clients with guidance/assistance as well as design when they are integrating and interfacing the ServiceNow platform with various other systems and technologies such as Microsoft Active Directory (LDAP), Single Sign-On, etc.
When I am not working on a project, I continue to sharpen my skills in areas that I feel need improvement. To help others learn these areas as well, I create documentation and collateral as well as technical notes for future ServiceNow deployments. I also assist the Sales team with research and documentation.
What’s the best part of your current role with Sierra Systems? What is the most challenging aspect and how do you manage it?
I really enjoy my interactions with various people across industries which makes my work very interesting. ServiceNow is also a large platform that keeps growing so there is always something new to learn which keeps me engaged.
While working with various people is captivating, it is also challenging because everyone is different! Sometimes it takes a great deal of effort to adjust to wildly varying ways-of-working, from client to client and from company to company. I find starting each project with a “fresh” mind helps.
How did you get into the business?
For a long time, I understood the value that ITSM can provide to a company when it is well implemented. Coupled with SaaS cloud technology, I found ServiceNow to be at the top of the market share for good reasons. What attracted me the most was the fact that as an Implementation Specialist, a wide range of skills are needed: from networking, to firewalls and web technologies, to Java Script development, and ITIL.
Are there any particular training you’d recommend for those interested in a similar career?
ServiceNow offers a variety of courses tailored to different modules of the platform that focus on the skills necessary for a certain role. I recommend starting with the System Administration course which allows learners to start with the basics of the ServiceNow platform, such as learning how to perform fundamental administration and configuration tasks. Depending on the desired path one wishes to take, the next steps are easy to identify as the vendor offers a variety of courses for each major module as well as for each major role.
Is there anything you wish you had done before joining Sierra Systems which would have better prepared you for your career now?
While preparing for an IT consulting career, I wish I had the hindsight to polish my “soft skills” as I often find myself interacting with a large variety of people, not only clients but colleagues as well. I strongly believe “people skills” are key to becoming a successful consultant.
What has enabled you to successfully grow your career at Sierra Systems? What impact has the Career Advisor/Career Owner relationship/program had on that?
Opportunity and trust are the top two factors that have enabled me to remain engaged at Sierra Systems, but also grow in almost all areas. Simply by being given the opportunity to showcase my skills, I believe I was able to successfully represent the company in various projects. Since the beginning of my employment, I was blessed with a Career Advisor and a Manager who both took time to understand and assist me throughout my career at Sierra Systems. I came to appreciate the moments when my Career Advisor pushed me in the right direction when needed.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Being able to blend my top three passions is something that makes me realize how lucky I am: my family, my cars, and vinyl records. Working with my 10-year-old son on cars brings joy to almost every summer weekend; seeing how we share the same passion is something I look forward to in the years to come.
In the long cold Canadian evenings, I enjoy my other passion: music, which I share with my wife. Powering up my turntable, sitting in front of the fireplace and listening to music makes time fly.
Do you love to travel? Tell us about a favorite destination.
Surprisingly, my favorite place to travel to is my home country Romania. During the years, I’ve realized that being born there I took a lot for granted and never bothered to visit many beautiful places the country has to offer. I especially enjoy travelling there with my son.
If you weren’t in your current role and had an opportunity to do anything, what would you be? Rock Star? Celebrity Chef? Olympian? Prime Minister?
Being one of the few people who actually does what I have always wanted to do, it’s very difficult to decide what else I’d want to do. The one thing the comes to my mind is being a Science-Fiction writer.

I began computer programming as a hobby, then decided to start a Computer Science Program at the University of Regina to extend my knowledge on Software Development.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the business?
You should enjoy solving all types of problems and working with others.
How have you managed your transition from a technical professional to a consultant? What would you recommend to others who may be considering the same move?
As a senior developer I feel the role is very similar to a consultant’s. I recommend that others work through as many different types of businesses and projects before becoming a consultant.

I like to play squash; I participate in most of the tournaments in my city. My other passion is riding my motorcycle; I love exploring the British Columbia back country.

As a consultant travel is often a component of your work schedule. How do you manage your professional and personal obligations while on the road?
I have travelled a lot during my time as a freelance consultant and welcome the opportunity to travel more. While I travel I focus on the client’s needs, exercise daily, and eat quality food.
When I asked my interviewer what he liked about Sierra Systems, he went on for 20 minutes. That’s when I knew Sierra treats employees well and that is why I chose Sierra.

Technical Dynamics CRM Consultant – Industry and Technology
Glenn – Technical Dynamics CRM Consultant – Industry and Technology

Title: Technical Microsoft Dynamics CRM Consultant – Industry and Technology
Years at Sierra Systems: 1
What is your current title and role?
I specialize in Microsoft Dynamics CRM as a functional consultant. My strongest industry is Higher Education followed by Non-Profits. However, I have worked in many verticals such as Oil and Gas, Farming, Wireless Providers, K-12 education, Insurance, Financial, Automotive, scheduling and payroll, HR and Grocery Inventory Management. Looking at that last sentence, I’ve been around for a while…
What were your previous roles before joining Sierra Systems?
I’ve been in the software industry directly since 1997. I have held the role of Developer, Developer Team Lead, Development and Support Services Manager and Senior Consultant. And sometimes, gopher. Gophers are good.
Tell us about your daily activities and what you are responsible for
Presently my activities involve consulting on CRM projects and responding to RFP requests on the CRM projects. Determine a fit/gap between what the customers want vs. what the application platform can provide.
What’s the best part of your current role with Sierra Systems? What is the most challenging aspect and how do you manage it?
The best part of my current role is the interaction with the people at Sierra. The professionals I have met so far are extremely positive, knowledgeable and collaborative. They have a sincere interest in the customer which is refreshing.
How did you get into the business?
Ok, now I am going to reveal my age. During the mid-80s I attended the University of Winnipeg. This was back when computer programming was completed on punch cards and then read into a main frame computer. Year 2 we had 286 desktops… amazing technology. During that time period I was working for a Security Protection company as a manager and a licensed private investigator. I stayed in that career for 15 years. When that company transferred me to Calgary I got tired of doing that kind of work (being on call 24/7) so I reached out to a local software company looking for a legacy programmer (DOS, Visual Basic and Q Basic). That was 1997 and I haven’t looked back since. I started as a forms programmer for a legacy application. This application provided services to Automotive dealership in the Finance office. That type of work took me to 2010. In 2011 I started down the path of the Microsoft Dynamics products and have keenly enjoyed this work ever since that point.
Are there any particular training you’d recommend for those interested in a similar career?
I took my CRM courses online with a company called NetCom Learning. The online instructor for the classroom session was out of Las Vegas, Nevada. Their course for CRM was very intuitive, precise and informative. I took this course after working with the CRM product for 2 years and found it extremely beneficial and the company extremely supportive and professional.
Is there anything you wish you had done before joining Sierra Systems which would have better prepared you for your career now?
Yes, completing my 2016 CRM certifications. That way my associated certifications would have been most current before I joined.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the business?
Stay current! Also, stay certified. Those certifications prove your knowledge. Without the certifications it is just word of mouth. And be open to change. In this business, change is ever present and if you have an issue with an ongoing change environment, you won’t last.
How have you managed your transition from a technical professional to a consultant? What would you recommend to others who may be considering the same move?
Learning the application(s) you support from a user perspective is the first thing. You have to know every nook and cranny of the application. All the undocumented enhancements. Next learning about the supporting technologies and environments that your application resides within. Without knowing all of that, consulting for a customer is narrow in scope. Also, keep continuously learning about these products and environment as they change rapidly. And be open to new ideas. I learn every day from the professionals I meet and interact with. We all have different experiences and approaches which makes working a consultant a rich environment.
What has enabled you to successfully grow your career at Sierra Systems? What impact has the Career Advisor/Career Owner relationship/program had on that?
I like the existence of the Resource Manager and the Career Advisor. Working in this structure provides the type of feedback that can only further your career. As I am new here I look forward to the mentoring approach that is in place at Sierra.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Music. I play piano, clarinet and also sax. I also organize benefit concerts for those in need. Most recent was for the Fort McMurray fires where in 2 hours we raised over $3000 for the Red Cross
Do you love to travel? Tell us about a favorite destination.
I love to travel within Canada. I have had the good fortune to have travelled to every province except Quebec (something I need to correct). This country is beautiful beyond compare.
What personal skills aid your career growth at Sierra Systems?
I am a good listener. As consultant you have to pay attention and listen to the details. Even the most minute details can sway a project in the correct, or incorrect direction. Sometimes that means letting the customer get what they want to say out whether that is relevant to the immediate question or not.
As a consultant travel is often a component of your work schedule. How do you manage your professional and personal obligations while on the road?
I have a family support system that just picks up when I am away. I am very fortunate this way. And when I am away, the lines of communication stay open as we, as a family, touch base daily.
If you weren’t in your current role and had an opportunity to do anything, what would you be? Rock Star? Celebrity Chef? Olympian? Prime Minister?
Definitely musician. Concert pianist. I still play for audiences now, but to do that as a career would be uber-awesome!

Resource Management & Recruitment
Marlo – Resource Management & Recruitment

Title: Resource Management & Recruitment
Years at Sierra Systems: 6
What practice, solution, or industry specialty do you have?
It’s a combination between Resource Management & Recruitment. I work with our internal employees to help identify opportunities with our clients, while providing administrative and management support to them and our internal sales and delivery teams. I also do a lot of external recruiting and have supported nearly every location across Canada during my tenure with the company.
Tell us about your daily activities and what you are responsible for.
My day is divided between recruiting for our external positions, and providing our teams with resource management support. As a Resource Manager (RM) it’s important that our employees know they can reach out to you for any issues or concerns; whether it’s entering time cards, booking vacation, completing or getting approval for training, help with compensation, or support in their Performance Management process. At the same time, I’m managing an external pool of candidates, updating and refreshing job postings, and reaching out to candidates via LinkedIn or from our database/applicant tracking system. I’m also conducting interviews, reference checks, requesting hiring approval, and guiding people through our hiring process. I’m also working with our sales and delivery teams to ensure we have the right person on the right project, identifying any gaps and then developing a recruiting plan to fill those gaps.
Are there any particular training/courses/experiences you’d recommend for those interested in a similar career?
I took the HR Business Administration program at Mount Royal University part time while I worked full time. It was hard work and took me a few years to finish, but I was very glad to complete the program. I also obtained a Professional Recruiting designation. I would also suggest that the CHRP course provides a good foundation in HR/Recruitment and Selection.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the business?
Learn how to cold call. You must be able to pick up the phone without hesitation and call the most senior person in an organization to ask for what it is you want. This takes practice but is a key part of the job. Stretch your comfort boundaries every day. Interviewing also takes a lot of practice to do effectively. Also, keep up with what is current in social media. Networking has become an online activity and it’s important to understand the ways to use the available tools to your advantage.
What has enabled you to successfully grow your career at Sierra Systems? What impact has the Career Advisor/Career Owner relationship/program had on that?
I have an excellent relationship with my career advisor. He is very understanding and helpful. My current manager also has provided me CA support in the past and has been instrumental in providing much needed advice and guidance. When I expressed an interest in doing more Resource Management work I was fully supported by these mentors and have been given the growth and advancement opportunities I’ve asked for. During times when I’ve had challenges, I’ve been given the opportunity to address those challenges and continue to improve myself. I can ask for advice or ask questions anytime and I know they have my best interests in mind. I’ve never had a Career Advisor in any other company but it’s a relationship and a benefit to working here that I truly value and appreciate.
What do you like to do outside of work? Tell us about your passions.
I have always had involvement with the arts. I grew up in a family that was heavily involved in the local theatre community and I have done a lot of acting. I’ve had bit parts in local TV and got to work on a film once, which was a great experience. I also love to sing and have participated in different musical groups and endeavors over the years. I also love to dance (I take and sometimes lead classes), and I also really enjoy golfing.
How does Sierra Systems support your love for those passions?
Our benefits program offers a Wellness spending as part of our flexible benefits program. I can use some of the money form that to go towards the cost of my dance classes. Also, one of my recruiter colleagues has recently been given the opportunity to travel to France for a 3-month art study program, and the company is supporting her by granting her leave to attend! I don’t know of any other company that supports their people in this way.
Do you love to travel? Tell us about a favorite destination.
I love to travel and in particular Latin America is of interest to me. I have traveled to Mexico several times as my parents used to live there; I also recently went to Costa Rica. I’ve been learning to speak Spanish too… pero, muy lentamente.
If you weren’t in your current role and had an opportunity to do anything, what would you be?
If I could pursue anything I wanted, I would probably pursue music. I love to sing and have always had a passion for all different types of music genres as well as a desire to perform.

Lead Consultant
Wayne - Lead Consultant

Title: Lead Consultant
Years at Sierra Systems: 5
What solution or industry specialty do you have?
Many of my projects have been with Government agenices in both British Columbia and Alberta, but I was also involved with a Nuclear power plant project, a Justice project, and even a project “on the other side of the fence” with Managed Services.
Tell us about your daily activities and what you are responsible for?
They vary hugely depending on the project(s) I’m working on. An average day might include:
First thing in the morning, moderate our daily Scrum. Most of my team is in Victoria, while others are in Toronto, Spokane, and I’m usually working from home.
Afterwards, talk to the Project Manager, Product Manager in Toronto about product specifications, requirements, scheduling issues, and which resources to assign to which tasks.
Do some architecture: Use the Entity Architect tool to add some new tables to the SQL design for some upcoming functionality we will be working on.
Do some programming: Work on a new framework or API that will be needed in an upcoming sprint.
Do some mentoring: Talk to a programmer and help them solve a technical issue.
Discuss issues with client: Attend a meeting with the client, who is in northern Ontario.
Provide an estimate for some new piece of functionality.
Responsible for: all the technical stuff to work.
How did you get into the business?
When I was in Grade 12, my high school offered their very first course in programming languages. I got an ‘A’, and it planted a seed in my brain. A couple of years later, I enrolled at BCIT and began my career with computers.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the business?
35 years ago a family friend gave me this advice, “Don’t bother going into computers – programmers will have programmed everything by the time you graduate”. My advice is to ignore this advice. The broader IT field is a vibrant and exciting place to work.
Tell us about your favourite moment at Sierra Systems?
Visiting a live nuclear reactor facility was pretty cool. Being allowed to tour the control room was the best. I think this happened because the Sierra Systems salesman had a great rapport with the client.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love the outdoors – mainly hiking or biking. I have two bicycles, one for road riding and one for mountain biking. My favourite mountain right now is Sumas as it’s fairly close and offers an amazing assortment of intermediate and advanced cross-country trails. In the spring and summer, it’s difficult to find enough time to accommodate all my interests!

Principal Business Analyst
Stacy – Principal Business Analyst

Title: Principal Business Analyst
Years at Sierra Systems: 4
What practice, solution, or industry specialty do you have?
I am currently part of the Systems Integration group. I have worked with both the Justice practice and SharePoint practice, specializing in custom development and integration.
What was/were your previous roles at Sierra Systems?
I have always been a Business Analyst throughout my career and have gained my BA experience through the various projects that I have worked on over the years.
Tell us about your daily activities and what you are responsible for.
I am responsible for gathering and analyzing system requirements. I work with the business to design the application that they would like to have, while providing guidance on the solution that is best suited for the business need. I also work with the development team, providing the models, specifications and mockups that are required to ensure the implementation matches the design. Additionally, I also mentor other analysts on the team, providing guidance on how to analyze and decompose existing applications, as well as how to construct and expand on system requirements to create new functionality.
What’s the best part of your current role with Sierra Systems? What is the most challenging aspect and how do you manage it?
The best part about my role is paying it forward – working with and mentoring other business analysts. I also like the variety of opportunities. I’m always learning something new, and the projects have allowed me to work all over the country. The most challenging part of my role is when client business groups are not aligned or are unclear on their needs. In cases like these, I’ll separate the meetings so that each group will have their opportunity to express their needs, and then I’ll break my questions down so that the answers may be more definitive.
How did you get into the business?
I graduated in business management with minors in eCommerce and Information Systems. Shortly after graduating, I was able to get a job working with a small consulting firm. I was exposed to a variety of IT projects from hardware selection and support to project management activities for software development. I eventually gravitated towards business analysis.
What do you like to do outside of work? Tell us about your passions.
I love the outdoors, so when the weather is nice, I’m usually camping and boating. Aside from that, I’m also an avid foodie, so I am always looking for new places to eat, or I will be in the kitchen testing out a new recipe.
If you weren’t in your current role and had an opportunity to do anything, what would you be?
A famous architect
I joined Sierra Systems because of its humble reputation. People’s faces light up when they hear Sierra Systems because they know the impact Sierra has. Sierra Systems stands out and I am proud to be part of this.

Business Analyst
Velray - Business Analyst

Title: Business Analyst
Years at Sierra Systems: 22
What previous roles have you held?
Some of my previous roles at Sierra Systems have been Account Coordinator (Provincial & Local Government industry then for the Justice & Public Safety practice), Senior Finance Clerk and Proposal Coordinator.
Tell us about your daily activities.
Currently I’m part of a Business Analysis team responsible for requirements gathering and documentation on a licensing and permitting project with the City of Portland. I’m also involved with some of the internal quality assurance of the permit configurations once built.
What is the best part of your current role with Sierra Systems?
My coworkers have such an incredible breadth and depth of knowledge and experience, and are so willing to share it with me, it’s an incredible blessing to work with such a team. A close second is the gathering and analyzing of client requirements and how they can be made to work in the confines of the product they’ve purchased.
What is the most challenging aspect and how do you manage it?
The most challenging aspect at the moment is juggling the details of each permit type and keeping them all straight (this is my first licensing and permitting project and I’m sure this will become easier with experience). Currently, to manage this, I spend time reading and reviewing before answering any questions. That challenge is definitely offset by seeing the client’s enthusiasm when we effectively capture their requirements. It is particularly gratifying when the Requirements Documents get approved and then seeing each permit come to life in the configuration.
What has enabled you to successfully grow your career at Sierra Systems? What impact has the Career Advisor/Career Owner relationship/program had on that?
I give credit to many people and changes over the years that have enabled me to grow my career at Sierra Systems. Some that come to mind are:
Sierra Systems’s evolution as a company – organizational structure changes allowed me to experience many of the roles I’ve had;
Participation in the pilot Victoria Peer Mentorship program allowed me to work with an experienced Business Analyst over a period of 6 months, exposing me to many of the facets of a BA role and helped me make the decision to take my career in this direction. We met once a week, over lunch times, where she would explain and demonstrate specific aspects of the role and then, between our meetings, I would practice those skills;
The Career Advisor program – My Career Advisors have provided me with practical advice and ideas, encouraging support and access to roles that helped me on the path to becoming a Business Analyst
Other experienced BAs’ willingness to share their knowledge and encouragement, pretty much any time; and
Other people’s faith in my abilities and my own determination, drive and commitment
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love walking and hiking, going out to eat, spending one-on-one time with friends, being spiritually built up, volunteering (for the past five years with dogs at the Victoria SPCA, before that with the Victoria Police Department). I also have a new passion for podcasts; the way they exercise my mind while I’m running or taking the bus (two activities I need motivation to do regularly). One of my current favourites is ‘Where There’s Smoke’ by Brett Gajda and Nick Jaworski – I challenge you to listen to just one of their podcasts and see if you aren’t hooked.
Do you love to travel? Tell us about a favorite destination.
Yes! I’ve been to Australia almost too many times to count (love their summer during our winter) and have made some great friends along the way. I also spent six weeks travelling through Italy, Southern France, Spain, and a bit of England and loved it all. I should also mention Portland, I’ve been fortunate enough to be working on a project there since early 2014 and love the city!

Director
Claire – Director

Title: Director
Years at Sierra Systems: 12
What previous roles have you held?
Started off as a junior Business Analyst and was fortunate to have many fantastic mentors which enabled me to move into Project Management. Before joining Sierra I spent 17 years working for the Metropolitan Police in London at New Scotland Yard. There I have had a many different exciting roles and very different from working in taxation!
Tell us about your daily activities and what you are responsible for.
Each day is different dependent on what stage the projects are at. It can be creating project planning documents, status reports, client meetings, meeting with the Executive Directors as well as checking in with the team(s). Other days some time spent on organizing “cooking/baking challenges” or “team colour days” to build team and client relationships. Everyone loves treats!
What’s the best part of your current role with Sierra Systems?
Being a Career Advisor – I truly believe that the mentoring and support one provides, not only to your Career Owners, but to your team members, makes a difference. Listening, understanding, providing the best advice possible and building confidence fosters a supportive environment and encourages growth.
What is the most challenging aspect and how do you manage it?
Remembering the work/life balance, when you are passionate about your work and exciting additional opportunities arise, it can be difficult to say “no”.
How did you get into the business?
When moving to Canada, it was time for a change and I basically fell into a Business Analyst role. I knew I was very good at asking questions, easily build good relationships, worked well with teams, have an analytical mind and some say, a great sense of humor! All of that lead me into the consultancy world and starting my career off. Suffice to say I have not looked back since.
Are there any particular training/courses/experiences you’d recommend for those interested in a similar career?
The most important aspect of our work is communication and being able to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively. Learning those skills can achieved in many ways and really is dependent on the confidence one has. Workshops, Courses, Toast Masters, being a “Trainer” or hosting meetings all can help and build on our communication skills.
Tell us about your favourite or most challenging project or moment at Sierra Systems?
The most challenging project I have been assigned to was a project in Regina. What made it memorable? The weather, never before in my life had I experienced -40 degrees and spending 2 years travelling back and forth knowing that snow was waiting, was certainly the most memorable part of that project. That as well as listening to Country Music, every day – continuously, many different versions of tracker songs.
Were other Sierran’s instrumental in helping you succeed?
Yes my team were very helpful, I was told to layer my clothing to fight off the cold and wear flat shoes – I never wear flat shoes.
What has enabled you to successfully grow your career at Sierra Systems?
Throughout my career I have been very fortunate to work with exceptional teams and have mentors who have enabled me to grow as a person and build on my skills that I need to excel in what I do best. The support and the team work that we have at Sierra Systems is really what makes the difference for the people that work here.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I am passionate about reading. Since an early age I have always had a book to hand. Winter evenings I sit in my library at home with a glass of red and summer times I sit in my hammock with a glass of white with a good book. If I am not reading, I am running, the best way to decompress and get into that zone with club/dance music.
Do you love to travel?
Love to travel and spend the majority of my travelling back to London, Spain, or Las Vegas. Local travel is spent up at a cabin in Ucluelet by the edge of the rain forest on the beach. Peaceful and chill time with my husband, two dogs, and no Facebook, BBM messaging, text, Skype or phone calls. Heaven!
What is your favorite Sierra Systems community/social event and why?
The Christmas Party. It’s the time of year that we can dress elegantly, have fantastic food, mix with friends, and I get to play the MC for the night in the attempt to convince everyone (including my husband) how funny I am.
As a consultant travel is often a component of your work schedule. How do you manage your professional and personal obligations while on the road?
Balancing work/life when travelling can be challenging however it can be a good experience of scheduling your life differently for a while. I schedule my fitness into my travel either by using a gym or running after work commitments. I schedule time for updating and building on skills that I would not normally fit in when busy on projects at home. I make sure I have a book whether for pleasure or work to hand for those waits in the airports or on the plane. I find that taking the positive side and experience out of travelling helps keeping you balanced.
If you weren’t in your current role and had an opportunity to do anything, what would you be?
A difficult one, but I would say I would love to own a book shop that was located by the beach and next door to a shoe shop.

Years at Sierra Systems: 4
What is your current title and role? What practice/solution/or industry specialty do you have? I’m a Principal in our Justice & Public Safety practice, meaning that in addition to working on projects for our clients I also have a leadership role within the company through things like participating in operational decision-making, mentoring others, business development and helping to define our business strategy.
What were your previous roles before joining Sierra Systems?
A background in Criminology, Criminal Justice & Software Development.
Tell us about your daily activities.
I project manage, develop strategic plans and business solution architecture as well as support our sales team by helping identify opportunities for new business. On the management side of the house, I work with our resource team to help ensure that all of our consultants are fully engaged on meaningful work that they enjoy. I also participate on one of our employee engagement teams, helping to identify and implement a variety of initiatives aimed at creating the conditions in which all Sierra Systems people are motivated to maximize their capabilities and potential.
What is the best part of your current role with Sierra Systems? What is the most challenging aspect and how do you manage it?
As both a ‘people-person’ and a big problem-solving addict, the opportunity to work collaboratively with our clients and a group of truly talented and committed colleagues to solve real-world business problems with technology solutions is still what gets me fired up about what I do even after 16 years. It never gets old and I love it. The funny thing is that it’s the same things that are also the most challenging. Collaboration and problem solving are hard, and sometimes getting a project successfully across the line can really test your resolve. For me it’s important to be fit and healthy and have a full life away from work as ways to combat stress, and I also like to reach out to a few trusted colleagues when I need perspective.
How did you get into the business?
When it comes to careers there are no straight lines and sometimes the path to where you want to be is not what you might expect. I didn’t really know that I wanted a career in IT until I had one. Armed with a B.A. in Criminology and some industry work experience, I applied for an entry level IT job as a ‘SME’ because it sounded interesting. My only real experience with computers was as a user, but having grown up in my dad’s auto repair shop I could understand the concept of technology as a business tool and the fundamentals of running a business. I worked my way up from there, with some extra education along the way.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the business?
Consulting and Professional Services Delivery are very different beasts than other kinds of technology business, especially product development and sales. If you’re thinking about a career in consulting, talk to someone you know in the field and try to get a sense of what some of the important differences are to make sure it’s the right fit for you.
What was the most challenging project you’ve worked on at Sierra Systems? Were colleagues instrumental in helping you succeed?
What I’ve enjoyed most about Sierra Systems is that it’s a very teamwork-oriented company, colleagues are always instrumental in helping me succeed.
What has enabled you to successfully grow your career at Sierra Systems? What impact has the Career Advisor/Career Owner relationship/program had on that?
The opportunity to try different skills. We do so many kinds of projects there really is no shortage of places to stretch your professional legs a bit and grow professionally.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Family occupies a large part of my life outside work – I have two kids ages 6 and 8. I also enjoy local government and politics so I volunteer for my local neighborhood Residents’ Association and for a Citizen Engagement Committee at City Hall, as well as supporting political campaigns at election time. I also really love spending time outdoors; on the slopes, in the yard, camping, biking, hiking. Anything that gets me outside in the fresh air.
Do you love to travel? Tell us about a favorite destination.
Definitely, though it’s hard to find the time! With kids our destinations are usually family oriented, like ski resorts in winter or visiting family. Before working for Sierra Systems I lived in Australia for a while and we’re planning to head back for a visit.
What is your favorite Sierra Systems community/social event and why?
The summer BBQ – it’s fun and usually involves a sunny patio and a cold pint!
As a consultant travel is often a component of your work schedule. How do you manage your professional and personal obligations while on the road?
Stick to a regular travel schedule if you can, for more predictability. Be responsive to others’ communications – family, friends or colleagues and clients – and make sure to invest your time in proactively reaching out. Thankfully there are many technology tools to help you stay engaged. Most important – especially for family – is to make face-to-face time a top priority when you are home.
If you weren’t in your current role and had an opportunity to do anything, what would you be?
Probably a musician – I love music.

Business Analyst
Allison - Business Analyst

Title: Business Analyst and Lead Consultant CBAP®
Years at Sierra Systems: 9
If you could be anything, what would it be? Maybe a wedding planner or personal organizer. I often find myself cleaning out my closets at home and finding new ways to keep our “things” tidy.
What were your previous roles before joining Sierra Systems?
I was hired into a BA Consultant role at Sierra Systems fresh from the University of Victoria.
Tell us about your daily activities.
They vary depending on the client and project, currently I am analyzing processes to prepare for an ERP implementation. I attend meetings with the business to elicit how they do their jobs today, I take that information and build diagrams that represent what tasks are done, who does them, and what tools/systems are used. To ensure I have the correct information I verify the diagrams with the business.
How did you get into the business?
Through my university program, I learned about Business Analysis related topics.
What is the most challenging aspect and how do you manage it?
The most challenging aspect of my role is the variance in assignments. I manage this through continuous hands on learning. I take the basic BA activities that I have experience with and enhance it with a few new techniques based on the problem I am facing. I also take the time to manage my BA “toolkit” so that I can recycle templates I have used in the past.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the business?
Find a mentor. I have been involved in several mentor/mentee relationships and regardless of which side you are on, it is always a great learning experience. It is a chance to bounce your ideas off someone else with more experience.
Tell us about your moment at Sierra Systems? What made it memorable?
Every August 8. After 9 years a co-worker still emails each year to wish me a happy work anniversary. It reminds me that the work I do matters.
What has enabled you to successfully grow your career at Sierra Systems? What impact has the Career Advisor/Career Owner relationship/program had on that?
I attribute my growth to my passion for Business Analysis, my passion for helping others, and my formal and informal Career Advisors. Sierra Systems formal Career Advisor program has helped me to define goals that push me beyond my comfort zone.
What personal skills aid your career growth at Sierra Systems?
Personal organization is one skill that has contributed largely to my success. Communication skills are also critical, especially as a Business Analyst.
Tell us about a favorite travel destination.
My next vacation is either going to be Bora Bora or Amsterdam. Both sound amazing and it’s hard to decide which to do first. Bora Bora has huts over the ocean while Amsterdam is where my family originate from.
What attracted me to Sierra was the size – bigger than a start-up but smaller then a big 4 or an IBM consulting firm. In other words, the entrepreneurial spirit and energy of a small organization is apparent, while having the expertise and broad market portfolio of a larger consulting house.
During the past 19 years, I have seen a lot of changes to Sierra, but the one thing that stays constant are the incredible people.

A solid educational background in computer science/technology is definitely an asset. In this rapidly evolving technical environment staying current is critical. Pursuing training and certification in the specific area you want to work is highly recommended.
Tell us about a favourite project at Sierra Systems?
Definitely the design and development of our corporate Performance and Career Management system. It’s memorable to me as it allows all of our employees to set goals for the year and track their progress towards achieving them. Winning the in-house award for the employee who works and plays the hardest in 2013 has to be another favourite for me, although not a project I make it my mission!
What do you like to do outside of work?
I’m a fitness nut and try to get outside as much as possible. My favorite outdoor pursuits include cycling, swimming, and running.

My current title is Director Consulting Services. I also have experience working as a Senior Project Manager specializing in complex project delivery in Systems Integration and an Application Development context.
What were your previous roles before joining Sierra Systems?
I spent the last 20+ years with IBM Global Services in a variety of Delivery / Sales and Operations roles. Most of my time has been in Public Sector in Victoria and Edmonton.
Tell us about your daily activities and what you are responsible for
I am currently splitting my time between two projects. I am managing a small software development project as well as a PM for a complex integration program while also helping in bid responses and recruitment interviews.
How did you get into the business?
Over twenty years ago, I took an intern position at Bell Mobility where they were looking to hire someone willing to expand their IT knowledge. I was essentially the assistant to the IT Director who ran our IT department. She developed these intern roles to give people a chance to learn the industry and develop into IT Managers. I worked there for two years before I was recruited by IBM.
Are there any particular training courses you’d recommend for those interested in a similar career?
I believe very much in training. When I started – I took a structured program in project management and eventually earned a master’s certificate in project management. Early in my career, I focused on acquiring certifications and credentials. Now I try to take targeted training in specific areas that either align with my projects or interest me. I also HIGHLY recommend taking a proposal writing workshop.
What advice would you give to someone coming into the business?
Invest in yourself. You always need to make time for “sharpening the saw” to keep your skills current. Pay attention to managing your network of colleagues, clients, teammates. You will be surprised at how often you will come across the same people throughout your career in a variety of different relationships. Former employees will become your clients, clients may become colleagues so it’s a great investment to take the time to keep in touch. It may lead to great opportunities in the future.
What do you like to do outside of work? Tell us about your passions
I play fiddle in a Celtic Band called the Shag Harbour Band. We play 30+ shows a year at pubs on Vancouver Island. I am a huge Lacrosse fan and am a season ticket holder for the Victoria Shamrocks. I also volunteer in minor sports in a variety of capacities.

I have lived and worked in many Canadian provinces (New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta & BC). I also lived in Australia as a kid (Melbourne and Canberra) and am a dual Citizen of Canada and New Zealand.
Putting our customers’ interests first gives me the motivation, flexibility, support and resources to do my job well. It’s the great people I get to work with every day who make it a pleasure to be part of Sierra. Sierra’s management cares about our people.

Marketing Manager
Alysia - Marketing Manager

Role: Marketing Manager, Business Operations
Years at Sierra Systems: 5
If you could be anything, what would it be? Archaeologist. Most people are quite surprised when I tell them I have a degree in Anthropology (in addition to a Marketing diploma) and focused many of my post-secondary studies in archaeology. Strangely, I’ve always had a secret admiration for ancient history, Indiana Jones, and dinosaur bones.
What was/were your previous roles at Sierra Systems? Before you joined Sierra Systems?
Prior to joining Sierra, I worked with both private and public sector organizations in the realm of communications, web and graphic design, and media relations. I had an extremely rewarding experience working at the City of Vancouver, in the coordination and execution of numerous municipal and 2010 Olympic Winter Games related special events.
Tell us about your daily activities and what you are responsible for.
As part of the Communications and Marketing team, I help manage our public facing activities and external media components, in addition to supporting our internal business operations, and our employees directly, helping to serve them in their varying roles as sales managers, consultants, and corporate support.
My daily tasks can range from coordinating logistics for a special event, to writing, developing, and building our internal and external websites, to tweeting, to designing presentation graphics, to developing tactical marketing campaigns, and to tracking and analyzing communication objectives in support of sales operations. A few times throughout the year I also have the opportunity to travel across Canada and the US in support of attending conferences and special events. Phew…
What’s the best part of your current role with Sierra Systems? What is the most challenging aspect and how do you manage it?
I think the best and most challenging aspects of my role at Sierra are one in the same, in that, I (alongside my marketing teammates), are here to offer support to the almost 900 employees that work at Sierra Systems, while at the same time, manage and deliver our own initiatives of external marketing campaigns and deliverables.
That’s not to say I personally have helped every single employee at Sierra, but, we openly accept the calls to lend a helping hand when someone needs it – sometimes it’s sourcing market research, sometimes it’s producing a client presentation, sometimes it’s making a project look pretty, and sometimes it’s asking for our two cents and expertise on communicating an email, a report, or an internal campaign.
As strenuous as that sounds, I relish the opportunities to hear about the exciting projects our teams are working on, to understand how our target markets vary across our offices and the country, and to learn about their challenges and construct workable solutions. My learning opportunities seem endless, as there are always new market trends to discover, emerging technologies to look out for, and dynamic aspects of business operations to dive into.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I’ve always had a passion to play in the outdoors. For the last few years, I’ve focused much of my time on bicycle racing, participating in numerous high profile professional events around BC and in Washington State. I’m also an Executive Board Member of one of Canada’s largest cycling clubs. In addition to squeezing in some backcountry skiing, mountaineering, and rock climbing, the only time I make for sitting still is to drink coffee.
Do you love to travel?
I’ve found my favourite places explored were always the most unexpected, old cities, hidden from the allure of tourists and crowds. After a whirlwind trip through Europe last year, my husband and I returned to our favourite small town in Belgium, and recently toured the countryside by bicycle, on the much revered rural roads of the spring classic bicycle races. I adored the cobblestones streets, friendly down-to-earth locals, and delicious beers.
