What makes an upgrade successful? In the next few weeks, I’ll focus a series of articles on the steps we believe are important to make your Oracle PeopleSoft 9.2 upgrade successful.
To begin, I discuss what you can do to prepare for the upgrade, secondly, I will cover detailed planning for the upgrade, and finally I’ll focus on the upgrade project and what you should create during the upgrade to enable you to take full advantage of the new selective adoption delivery model for PeopleSoft applications.
Before you begin planning your PeopleSoft 9.2 upgrade
Key activities to consider
- Ensure that any customizations you have are documented and understood. This means knowing what each customization does for your business, why the customization was created and what is involved in the customization.
- Have your technical architecture documented. New versions may require updates to your infrastructure. Make sure that you document the technical architecture and also understand your integrations to third party products. These can sometimes directly impact your upgrade and need to be assessed along with the technical infrastructure.
- Review the new features that have come out since the version you have installed (both functional and technical). Oracle provides the Cumulative Feature Overview (CFO) tool that allows you to select your modules and version and create a report of the differences between your version and the target version. This tool also provides access to Video Feature Overviews (VFOs) and additional documentation. It is helpful for your functional and technical team to create an initial list of areas of interest for new features in advance of upgrade planning.
- Identify the internal team that has the knowledge of your business, your implementation and your architecture to work with on the next phase, which is planning.
Now is also a good time to start to think about how your organization will take advantage of selective adoption and what changes you need to make to enable that.
